Yesterday I was at the election count at the Barclaycard Arena. The West Midlands Mayoral, along with Hall Green and Perry Barr by-elections were being counted.
Congratulations to Morriam Jan the newly elected councillor for Parry Barr.
Heartfelt thanks to Tanveer Choudhry who put up a great campaign against Labour, but just missed out on winning in Hall Green.
In the West Midlands Metro Mayor election,Andy Street, the conservative won with the Liberal Democrat’s Beverley Nielsen coming third in what was a hard fought election.
It was good to see so many people getting involved, and I truly believe that the majority of people standing for election want to help their communities. I chatted to the Green Party and Communist Party candidates, along with many supporters and activists from the Conservatives and Labour.
The only bad experience was the insulting and rude behaviour of a Labour Councillor, but another Labour councillor I get on well with, seemed horrified by this behaviour was very pleasant and apologised on her colleagues behalf.
I understand emotions run high and campaigners care about their party, but civility is key to a productive and cohesive society.
So, congratulations to all who won a seat to serve the people – I hope you work hard for your community, and to those that lost – don’t give up
