|From 6pm this evening (Friday 7 August) until 3am tomorrow morning (Saturday 8 August) police in parts of Birmingham will be using section 60 powers.|
It covers Ladywood, Perry Barr and Handsworth and gives police the power to stop and search people they suspect may be involved in violence, without the need to have reasonable grounds.
Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, authorises officers to stop and search people without reasonable grounds but where there is a risk of violence or it is believed that weapons are being carried.
The Section 60 is in place after a number of incidents of violence including firearms and robberies over the past few days.
